Introduction to Carpentry and Joinery

Our 6 week introduction to carpentry and joinery course is designed for learners with little or no previous experience in the construction environment.

 

Learning will take place in the purpose-built workshops where learners will have access to a broad range of tools and equipment. Learners will be introduced to key techniques and processes.

 

Sessions topics will include, working safely in a carpentry workshop, use of power tools and hand tools, the basic wood joint techniques used in building a door and techniques applied in fitting a door.

 

This course is an excellent way to gain the knowledge and confidence to use wood working tools and to take on small wood based projects within their own home. For those who discover a real passion for carpentry and joinery during the course there are further opportunities to study formal qualifications at Richmond Upon Thames College.

    This course is suitable for anyone with a keen interest in renovating their own property.

  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    There are no formal entry qualifications, just an interest in improving your hand skills and building knowledge. It is intended for those who have no previous experience or those who would like to expand their knowledge. During the course, you will be introduced to a variety of carpentry and joinery techniques. You should be familiar with some basic health and safety.

  • How will I be assessed?

    The teacher will record your progress and provide informal regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the expected achievements as outlined above.

  • What qualification will I get?

    At the end of the course you will receive a Richmond upon Thames College certificate of achievement.
