Construction and the Built Environment Level 2

The Level 2 Extended Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment provides a programme of study suited to post-16 learners who have a keen interest to work in the construction sector. The course provides a pathway to progress to employment in a wide range of job in the construction trades.

  • What will I study and learn?

    The course is called BTEC First Extended Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment.

    It is a full time course which covers construction design, sustainability and practical elements of construction such as carpentry and joinery, drawing and AutoCAD.

    The course is made up of 4 mandatory units

    • Construction Technology
    • Construction and Design
    • Scientific and Mathematical Application for Construction
    • Sustainability in Construction

    And optional units which may include:

    • Construction Processes and Operations
    • Construction Drawing Techniques
    • Exploring Carpentry and Joinery Principles and Techniques
    • Exploring Painting and Decorating Principles and Techniques
    • Painting and Paper Hanging Operations

    At the end of the first year you will have your progress reviewed to ascertain and assess your suitability for continuing with the course.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The course is assessed through a combination of coursework activities, practical work assignments, case studies and external tests/exams. All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification will be awarded.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    You should have an inquiring mind and a desire to design buildings with an ambition to either get a job within the construction industry after the course or progress to the next level.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    Minimum requirements - 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or above. Achievement in English and Mathematics through GCSE or Functional Skills.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

    This course provides an entry route to study at level 3 or apprenticeships.

    Many of the units will give you an insight into the career opportunities within the construction industry such as architecture, civil and structural engineering, quantity surveying, construction management and building surveying.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    You will require drawing equipment and a calculator. Books are available in the library if you choose to borrow them.
