Plumbing Level 1

This qualification is for learners wanting to learn the basic skills and knowledge involved in plumbing. The qualification covers a range of basic tasks and underpinning knowledge involved in plumbing. On successful completion of the course, students can progress to the Plumbing Level 2 Diploma.

  • What will I study and learn?

    Units taught include:

    • Structure of the construction industry
    • Fundamental safe working practices
    • Environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings
    • Site preparation for working in the construction industry
    • Above ground drainage
    • Copper pipework
    • Plastic pressure pipework
    • Low carbon steel pipework
    • Installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing systems
    • Plumbing science

    Completion of this course allows learners to progress to the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Studies.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The course is assessed through a mixture of practical and theory units which include a practical work portfolio and on-line exams. For example, what you have made in the workshop will be assessed. Your portfolio will be a workbook in which you write about how you completed your practical tasks in the workshops.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    You should have an interest in this type of subject and enjoy working out practical problems. You should enjoy working with your hands and have a good level of fitness. Attention to detail is also an essential for successful plumbing. You must be physically fit.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    Students will need English and/or Maths GCSE at Grade 4. You will need an assessment and interview and must be motivated, committed and have a positive attitude. 

  • What are my progression options?

    Once you have successfully completed the level 1 qualification course you may progress to Plumbing Level 2.

    The industry offers great opportunities for those with the relevant qualifications and motivation to succeed.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    All students will have to provide appropriate personal protective equipment (flame retardant overalls and safety boots/shoes) at approximately £70. You will also need to buy a calculator and memory stick. A textbook for the level of study is also required at an approximate cost of £30.
