Information Technology BTEC Level 1

IT stands for information technology and is now part of all our lives, from running the central heating to funfair rides and most jobs require an understanding of IT. As IT skills are so important this course has been designed to introduce the basics of a wide range of IT applications and is an ideal starting point for a career in IT, as well as giving you the skills to enter employment or to progress onto other courses.

  • What will I study and learn?

    This course is designed to encourage you to develop the personal skills and qualities you will need for work. We will give you the practical experience in the IT applications that are used in a wide range of jobs.

    The course is made up of a number of units as listed below. The core unit, which is Improving Productivity Using IT, gathers together all of the skills which will allow you to complete your own mini-project.

    The other units are:

    • IT User fundamentals
    • Using the Internet
    • Using mobile IT devices
    • Design software
    • Imaging software
    • Desktop publishing software
    • IT software fundamentals
    • Multimedia software
    • Presentation software
    • Spread sheet software
    • Website software
    • Word processing software

    The coursework is varied and includes written reports, presentations, preparation of displays and observation of tasks. All lessons take place in well-equipped IT suites where you will be able to work at your own PC to learn new skills and complete the practical work.

    We are now including a 'bonus' Learn to Learn qualification which will build up your study skills to help you succeed on this and higher level courses.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The course is 100% practical and written coursework, which will be set and assessed by your teacher.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    You will have to be prepared to develop your time management skills so that you can complete assignments and meet deadlines. You will need to have some research skills but you do not need to have any computer skills before you start. The college needs to be satisfied that you are keen to learn and want to complete the whole course.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    No formal qualifications are required. You will need an assessment and interview and must be motivated, committed and have a positive attitude. The course is designed for school leavers who are able to work at a level equivalent to GCSE grades 4-2/D-F.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

    On successful completion of this course you can progress to a Level 2 course.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    You will need a memory stick for £5 and portfolios, dividers and stationery will cost about £20. Fares for visits will cost in the region of £10 and you will also need your own headphones for online tutorials.
