IT / Network Support Professionals (Level 3) Advanced Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship offers you the chance to earn a wage while employed, at the same time as learning the practical skills required for the job. Once employment is secured, you will be trained 'on the job' and given the opportunity to develop your IT skills. This course requires you to work and attend college on a weekly basis where you will be taught in a classroom situation.

  • Who is the course for?

    This apprenticeship is aimed at students aged 16 and over who would like to pursue a technical career, as well as gaining a formal qualification. The apprenticeship recognises that employment in the IT sector involves a wide range of functions, tasks and activities, such as communicating with customers in writing; dealing with queries or problems, and ensuring that the service provided is consistent and to the highest standard. These functions, tasks and activities are constantly developing and changing and therefore this apprenticeship is suitable for candidates who have an interest in pursuing a career in an IT support role or who are already working in an IT support environment.

    The successful apprentice will need to be conscientious, mature, reliable, self-motivated, committed and enthusiastic. Along with the normal demands of being in employment, an apprentice is required to study for relevant qualifications, at the same time as being continually willing to learn and improve their skills.

  • Am I qualified to join the course?

    You will need:

    4 GCSEs including English and maths at grade C or above


    an appropriate NVQ2 or first diploma at merit with functional skills level 2 in English and maths

    Applicants without formal qualifications may be considered if they have relevant work experience.

  • What will the course cover?

    In order to complete the advanced apprenticeship you will be required to take the level 3 diploma in ICT professional competence and the Level 3 certificate in ICT systems and principles (BTEC) as well as level 2 functional skills in English, maths and ICT, if required. In addition, you will learn about your rights and responsibilities as an employee as well as legislation relevant to the IT industry and regulations relevant to your workplace. You will learn the technical skills needed to become an advanced practitioner and also how to handle and resolve customer problems. This apprenticeship requires that you attend college once a week and undertake independent study outside of college and work hours.

    • Offer 1st line support by appropriate means
    • Solve complex IT problems
    • Install a wide range of hardware and software
    • Be aware of Health and Safety issues related to your occupational area
    • Have knowledge of employment law
  • How will I be taught?

    You will be given the necessary 'on the job' training by your employer to cover the organisation's specific operational needs. This will involve attending relevant training sessions as and where necessary. You will be required to attend college one day per week. Your lessons will involve formal teaching using a variety of methods such as interactive SMART boards, PCs, recorded professional discussions and group work. You will be expected to take notes and meet all assignment deadlines. Functional skills lessons will also take place on these days for those who need to attend. In addition you will be allocated an assessor who will provide you with guidance through one-to-one workshops, using ICT equipment and worksheets to gain the further knowledge necessary to demonstrate your competencies.

  • How will I know I am progressing and how is the course assessed?

    You will be allocated an assessor whose role it is to evaluate your competency. When your assessor is satisfied that you have met all of the requirements for a unit, they will confirm this by signing an online evidence record sheet, to show that the assessment is complete. The assessor will visit you at your workplace on a monthly basis.

  • Will I have a chance to get my own views across?

    You will have constant contact with your assessor throughout the course. In addition, quarterly reviews with your assessor and workplace supervisor will give you the opportunity to provide feedback on any aspect of the course. At the end of the course you will have the opportunity to evaluate your course by completing a questionnaire.

  • What can the course lead to?

    From the advanced apprenticeship you could progress onto the IT Support Professionals Higher Apprenticeship or other IT qualifications at undergraduate level. Alternatively, you can continue to progress within the IT industry.

  • How do I apply?

    Please complete and submit the Apprenticeships Application Form, which should include an up to date reference. After the application form has been received, an interview will be arranged. As this is a roll-on, roll-off course, interviews will take place throughout the year, including during the summer.
