Business BTEC Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma

In the 21st Century all organisations need to make sure that the people in them are busy organising resources, producing, selling, marketing, managing their staff and managing their finances. Managers must organise these resources to provide goods and services for customers to be successful.

This level 3 extended diploma helps you develop skills, knowledge and the depth of understanding you need to prepare you for entry into employment, promotion if in a job and to gain entry to higher education.

The course is a practical, work-related course and you will cover areas such as promotion of a product, business planning, business online, and human resources management. In fact all the areas of business that need to be understood for businesses to be successful in the modern world.


STARTS IN SEPTEMBER

 

All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and academic programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course.

 

An example of this is BTEC students will study for a 90 credit qualification in the 1st year. Upon successful completion, they will be able to progress to the 2nd year and study a diploma/extended diploma qualification.

 

A level students will study AS Level in their first year and upon successful achievement will progress through to the full A Level in their second year.

 

UK and EU students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year will normally be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for students studying at Level 3.

 

Course fees (for learners aged 19+) may be charged as follows:

A Level programme (2 year course)
1 x A Level = £850 per annum
2 x A Levels = £1,700 per annum
3 x A Levels = £2,550 per annum

Plus registration/exam fees = £120 per A Level

 

Vocational programme (eg BTEC / CACHE / UAL)
90 credit qualification (year 1) = £2,550
Diploma/extended diploma qualification (year 2) = £2,550

 

Students who are 19+ years old with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority are not required to pay course fees (ie tuition fees are free). Students will be required to provide a final copy of their EHCP provided by the LA as evidence.

  • What will I study and learn?

    The diploma course attracts the same UCAS point score as 2 AS/A2 levels, while the extended diploma attracts the same UCAS point score as 3 AS/A2 levels. You will learn by completing research based investigations, projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands as well a visits to real workplaces.


    The core units are:

    • The business environment
    • Business resources
    • Introduction to marketing
    • Business communication

    You will also be offered additional units, which may include subjects such as:

    • Introduction to accounts
    • Introduction to internet marketing
    • Visual merchandising
    • Recruitment and selection
    • Career development
  • How is the course assessed?

    All units are internally assessed first by your class teacher who will then have it internally moderated to agree the final mark for that unit. This will then be checked by the exam board, Edexcel. There are no external exams.


    An overall grade for the qualification is awarded to you if you successfully complete all units. Grades awarded are pass, merit, and distinction.

  • What courses would combine well with this course?

    This course can be taken with an AS or AS/A2 level provided you have the necessary point score. If you have not achieved maths or English at GCSE grade C you will have to retake these subjects. If you do not have the necessary points for AS/A2 levels and have passed both maths and English at GCSE grade C you will take a certificate and/or diploma in financial studies which has the equivalent points to an AS or AS/A2 levels.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    This course is a practical way of studying business and you will need to have reasonable written and speaking skills to communicate ideas and thoughts effectively within a workplace type of setting as well as an enthusiasm for finding out relevant information.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and Maths at grade 4

    OR

    Level 2 Diploma at Distinction/Merit plus GCSE English and Maths at grade 4.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

    These diplomas are highly valued by employers and can lead to employment opportunities in certain specialisms such as finance, human resources, marketing as well as other business related careers. You may also use it to progress within employment to professional qualifications such as those offered by management accountants (such as CIMA or ACCA), accounting technicians (such as AAT), marketing (such as CIM) or personnel development (CIPD). You can also use it as a stepping-stone on to a degree or HND diploma course at university.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    Additional textbooks will be recommended at a cost of £30 and there will be costs involved in trips to outside organisations. All students should have their own pocket calculator.
