Art and Design Level 2 Diploma

This course is a creative, practical subject. In art and design you explore how to successfully express your ideas visually and how to develop your practical skills in different media. Art and design encourages you to be experimental and to explore lots of visual ideas which will lead to making exciting 2D and 3D finished work. You will also research the lives and work of other selected artists and designers.

  • What will I study and learn?

    The course is taught through practical projects and assignments. The projects cover a range of art skills such as drawing, painting, printmaking and crafts such as ceramics. You will produce individual outcomes through guided research, ideas, development, media experimentation and evaluation. During the course, we also make several research visits to art galleries and exhibitions.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The Diploma is made up of eight units, each with its own assessment criteria. To pass you must complete all units. The final unit of the year is a personal project. This project is marked at Pass, Merit or Distinction, giving you your grade for the qualification.

  • What courses combine well with this course?

    If you do not have a grade C in your English and maths GCSEs you will be continuing to study both maths and English alongside your level 2 art and design course.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    You should enjoy art and will probably be doing well in your GCSE in this subject. In your own time you should enjoy sketching, designing or making things.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    4 GCSEs at grade D including English at grade 3 and Art at grade D

    OR

    Level 1 Diploma at Pass with GCSE English at grade 3 and a good portfolio of art and design work.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

    Successful students generally progress on to the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design. If you do well at this advanced level it is possible to progress to an art degree at university or art school or perhaps a HND diploma which is usually studied at a higher education or further education college.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    A studio fee of £100 is payable at enrolment, which covers specialist art and craft materials.You can also expect to pay an additional £100 (approx.) for personal art materials and visits to museums and exhibitions.
