AAT Foundation Award in Accounting Software Level 2

On completion of the course, you will be able to use a Computerised Accounting System (SAGE), to enter accounting transactions, perform reconciliations, correct errors and produce a range of reports. You will also be able to maintain the security of accounting information using passwords and backups.


SAGE is the UK’s most popular Computerised Accounting system. Knowledge of this software package is therefore popular with employers. Such knowledge will also be useful in getting to grips with other similar packages. In addition, the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is an established and well-respected international accountancy body with a growing membership totalling 120,000.

  • Are there any materials or resources that I need to bring to the sessions?

    You will be provided with all the relevant course material for use within the sessions and for revision at home; you should also have pen/pencil, paper and a calculator. Please note that you will not be provided with your own copy of the SAGE accounting Software, but will have access to it for practice at the College.

  • What is expected from me at this level?

    The course does require commitment (both inside and outside the College) and it is essential that you attend all teaching sessions. We expect you to take the exam as per the Scheme of Work provided by the lecturer.

  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    The level 2 award is open to all regardless of educational background and has no minimum entry requirement. However you will need to be reasonably competent in basic Maths and the English language and we may do a basic skills/competency check before you start the course. Prior knowledge of double entry bookkeeping although desirable is not essential.

  • What experience would help me be suitable for the course?

    You do not need any particular experience to join the AAT course although you may recently have started working in an accounts function within a company, or be aiming to start your career in accountancy, or wish to start expanding your knowledge in a general administrative role.

  • How will I be taught?

    The teaching on this course will involve lectures, discussions and lots of worked examples. You will spend the majority of your time practising using a PC. Students will be expected to match the hours taught in the classroom with private study and to complete any homework set. There will be regular testing of knowledge in the classroom.

  • How will I be assessed?

    The module will be assessed through a computer-based project. Throughout the course your lecturer will record your progress and provide informal, regular feedback.

  • What qualification will I get?

    Once you’ve completed the introductory level and are recognised as competent in this module, you will be awarded the AAT Level 2 Award in Computerised Accounting.

  • What skills will I gain as a result of doing this course?

    You will learn basic bookkeeping skills such as preparing and entering invoices, credit notes, and recording cash, cheque and card transactions into SAGE, the UK’s most popular Computerised Accounting system.

  • What can the course lead to?

    On completion of this Level 2 course, you would qualify to work as an accounts assistant, in accounts payable, as an accounts receivable clerk, or as a cashier assistant dealing with petty cash and expenses, as Computerised Accouitng skills are considered highly desirable by employers. You would also qualify for many bookkeeping positions. If you are self-employed, you should be able to keep your own accounting records. If you wish to continue your studies, you should move on to the AAT Accounting Level 2 Certificate in Accounting . or the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookeeping, as appropriate. Your lecturer will go through the options with you.
