Access to HE Diploma Medicine

The Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) offers adult returners a coherent, integrated and supported year of study through which they will gain the knowledge, awareness, skills and confidence necessary for successful undergraduate studying in the intended progression routes for this Diploma.


The course aims to provide a balance of essential study skills with specialist subject knowledge to enable the students to be prepared for the academic and practical rigours of undergraduate study in medicine and allied medical professions. It must however be noted that the Access to HE Diploma does not provide guaranteed entry to UK Higher Education Institutions.

  • Are there any materials I need to bring to the sessions?

    Please ensure you are equipped to take notes in lessons. Any specialist equipment to be used in lessons will be provided by the college.

    Topic specific worksheets and handouts will be provided by the college. You will need to bring basic writing equipment e.g. notepads, pens, pencils, highlighters; a ruler and a calculator.

  • What is expected of me at this level?

    This is a fast-paced course and you will be expected to have good attendance and complete independent study outside of lessons. At the start of the course, you will be given a course calendar with a series of coursework submission dates which you will be asked to meet at regular intervals throughout the year.

  • Entry requirements 

    You will need GCSE grade C/4 or above in English Language and Mathematics, or a Level 2 Functional skills English and maths qualification. A GCSE grade C/4 or above in Science is desirable.

    Applicants with overseas qualifications will be invited for an assessment in English and Maths.

  • What experience would help me be suitable for the course?

    No practical experience is required for the course; however a personal interest in the subject and some basic reading around the subject would be useful to give you a better understanding of the medical industry. 

  • How will I be taught?

    You will learn about your subject in a variety of ways, including group work, independent research, taking part in discussions, visits, external speakers and live projects. You will expand both your skills through practical projects and you will also be encouraged to develop your study skills, including research, analysis and presentations.

  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed for each unit through assignments and coursework. The grading on the course is mainly at level 3 (GCE Advanced level).

  • What qualification will I get?

    On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the OCN Access to Higher Education Diploma in Medicine.

  • What skills will I gain as a result of doing the course?

    The course will prepare you for Higher Education course and interview. It will also help you develop your study skills and employability skills alongside a range of specialist skills including:

    • IT skills
    • Writing in a scientific style
