What is an Apprenticeship? If you are aged between 16 and 24 an Apprenticeship offers you the chance to earn a wage while you are learning the practical skills required to do the job. At the same time as being employed you will be working towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), an industry-related technical certificate, and Key Skills qualifications by attending Richmond upon Thames College on a part-time basis. Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true but, as an Apprentice, you really do get the best of both worlds! While studying for your qualifications you will also be benefiting from hands-on work experience (for which you will be paid by your employer). You will also be increasing your future employment opportunities. You will develop through a structured training programme which adheres to national occupational standards. This process provides an opportunity for employers, with the support of Richmond upon Thames College, to train staff to meet their organisations’ current and future skills needs. By employing apprentices, employers benefit from having high quality and motivated young members of staff who are prepared to work their way up the ladder. Employers can also put their own existing 16-24 year old employees on to the apprenticeship programme to improve motivation and loyalty. So, if you are already working and your employer agrees, you can apply immediately to become an apprentice. The qualification gained as an apprentice can lead to higher education. Our advanced apprenticeship programme can also prepare trainees for the new foundation degrees, should they wish to continue their studies to this level. We offer apprenticeships and advanced apprenticeships in the following vocational areas:
How does it work?We will assist in finding you employment and assign you a Skills Development Advisor who will be responsible for managing your work-based training programme. Your workplace supervisor will act as a mentor, helping you to develop and progress within the company. As an Apprentice, you will also be assigned an Assessor (provided
by Richmond upon Thames College) to support you with building your
NVQ portfolio. They will be responsible for your work-place assessment
and will visit you at work approximately once a month. If you would like more information about becoming
an apprentice or, alternatively, employing an apprentice (either an
established member of your staff or one recruited by us), please contact
